metadata..data about data

Bismillah...

Metadata simply means data about data, information about data or information about information. E.g. E471... which mean emulsifier coded with no 471 (there are lots other codes for emulsifier)

Long defination of metadata....
"Metadata is structured, encoded data that describe characteristics of information-bearing entities to aid in the identification, discovery, assessment, and management of the described entities" - American Library Association, Task Force on Metadata, June 1999

So what is the different between data and metadata?
mmm... actually not possible to distinguis them...because
1. something can be data and metadata at the same time, e.g. headline of an article is both its title (metadata) and part of its text (data)
2. data and metadata can change their roles
3. it is possible to create meta-meta...metadata
